Stanaback: Stanaback Special
Stanaback: Stanaback Special
I actually consider all of us "Knife Freaks"! Rhett has asked me to introduce myself to you and describe my Randall "Special" to you. I guess he figures you need that quarterly "knife fix".
My name is Captain Chris Stanaback, and the name of my company is Sportsman's Services of Florida. I have been dealing in Randalls longer than I care to admit, and have been an authorized Randall Knife dealer since 1986. Besides dealing in custom knives, I also sell firearms and the like. I guide fishing parties of 2 or less on Lake Okeechobee. I attend gun and knife shows all over the state when I'm not on the water.
But enough about me: on to this wonderful knife I'm about to rave about! The knife came about 4 1/2 years ago when a real character by the name of Jeff McCartney was trying to make something out of a broken Model 23 down at the Randall shop. Well if any of you know Jeff you know that besides being a key employee of Gary's, he is also very creative. Jeff fiddled with it's shape and grind line and the end result was what is now known as the "Stanaback Special".
I would love to bow to all you accolades regarding the design of this unique knife, but the actual truth is that, like many of the great Randall's, this one is derived from a mistake! I immediately fell in love with this tiny workhorse and after pleading with Dave Griffin (Randall production manager at the time) and Gary, I was finally allowed an exclusive dealership on this great knife. I shall attempt to describe it as follows:
The knife is a very beefy 4" trailing point hunter. It is 1/4" hand forged 440B stainless steel, making it one of very few Randall's this short and that strong! The blade is similar to a 12-6" "Little Bear Bowie", but should not be confused with a miniature. It actually looks like a cross between a little bear and a trout & bird. The blade is thumb notched & has a very forgiving finger choil. The hilt, butt cap, and handle material are all optional.
The sheath for my "SSP" is a model "B", and has the traditional Randall logo stamped on the back, as well as the initials "SSP". Tan is the only color available at this time.
This special has been enormously successful, and is always sold out well in advance. Well folks: all that is about to change! I've introduced a limited number of "SSP's" available this year unlike any of my specials before!
The blade specifications for this limited edition are the same as before. Previously, all Stanaback Specials came with stag, wood, exotics, or micarta handles. We are now offering it in leather! The longer tang forging allows for a commando shaped leather handle, as well as a brass butt cap and nut to top it all off. The hilt will be rounded brass and resemble a Model #7.
All SSP's will be serial numbered and limited to a total of approximately 100. The serial number will be located right next to the Randall trademark. This will allow for name etching on the opposite side of the blade. A letter of authenticity, along with a brief description of each knife, is included in the $225.00 price. As with all my Randalls, shipping is included. Name etching will be the usual $10.00 extra.
Availability on these specials, or any other cataloged Randall, is anywhere from current to approximately 1 year. Anything sold is at catalog price at all times. Payment is: cash, good checks, Mastercard, Visa & American Express. Please feel free to give me a call if I can be of any assistance to you all, in regards to this, or any other order. You may contact me at Capt. Chris Stanaback, 6211 Oakcrest Cr., Orlando, FL 32808 ph. 407-290-0179.

Stanaback: New Stanaback Special
Stanaback: New Stanaback Special
Over 2 years ago (RKS newsletter #9 Jan. 1991). I introduced club members to myself and my Randall Made "Dealers Special". I'm Capt. Chris Stanaback and those first "Stanaback Specials" sold like hot cakes to all of you folks.
I would like to thank all of you for your loyal support. Over the past 7 or 8 years you have helped to make "Sportsman's Services" of Florida the largest authorized Randall Knife dealer in the South.
So how can I repay you? I think I know a way. Give you folks first shot at my ALL NEW "Stanaback Special".
As you may or may not recall, the first Stanaback Special had a four inch blade. It was stainless steel and forged from 1/4 inch stock. Thumb notches were standard. A variety of hilts, handles, spacers and butt caps were available. There was also a limited edition of 100 serial numbered models. If you need a refresher, look on page 5 of newsletter 9.
My new special is different from this knife and yet it's the same. The response to the original was overwhelming, but I wanted to make the knife a little more practical for "All-Around" use. The only disadvantage to the first model was its length.
Many users and collectors alike admired its' design. I wanted to stay with that design and was successful in working with Gary Randall on the new model.
The specifications for the new model are the same as the first with a couple of exceptions. The blade length will be 4 5/8 inch. This is the same as the Model 22. The majority of these knives are going to have brass and black spacers and a brass butt plate but this is not etched in stone.
All handle shapes, materials, hilts, spacers and butt caps are available. Compasses, wrist thongs and name etching are as well.
The one radical difference between my new special and any other Randall is the sheath. Greg Gutcher and I have come up with a new design that is very functional as well as appealing. The sheath has an "EZE-LAP" sharpening steel attached to the front instead of the usual stone pocket. This steel unscrews from it's brass holding tube, inverts and screws back into the tube. This gives you a handle to hold onto and a longer surface to sharpen with. The sheath is oxblood in color with black stitching and a black snap.
The logo on the sheath is basically the same as the first model (marked SSP) however this is going to change shortly. The new logo with have Capt. Chris Stanaback written around the Randall Made Knives logo. All other specifications are the same.
If you have an opportunity to visit the Randall shop there is a prototype of my special in the museum. If you have any other questions about my "Stanaback Special" or any other models feel free to give me a call. Capt. Chris Stanaback, Sportsman's Services of Floriday, 1012 New York Ave., St. Cloud, FL 34769 ph. 407-957-8885 days.

Stanaback Special
Stanaback Special
Despite all of the controversy over big knife versus little knife one thing will always remain. When you break your big knife there's usually enough left to make a small knife! It is reported that from these beginnings came the "Stanaback Special". In mid 1987, Jeff McCartney, one of the Randall craftsmen, was working on a broken Randall blade attempting to reshape it into a useful knife. The blade stock was 1/4" and the end result was a short, heavy duty knife blade.
Also about this time, Captain Chris Stanaback of Sportsman's Services of Florida (largest Randall dealer in the south), was entertaining ideas for his Dealer Special. He leaned toward the "Little Bear Bowie" style but also wanted a blade shorter than the Bear's 6" length. Chris looked at the knife McCartney had shaped from the broken blade and realized the basis for his special had been formed.
The final result was a forged stainless steel blade 4" in length from 1/4" stock. The blade has the long upper bevel, at least long for a short blade, and gives the appearance of a knife which would really shine through a torture test. Thumb notches in front of the single hilt are standard and the handles are all of leather washer construction with a thru tang and butt cap. These knives are serial numbered and exactly 100 were produced. For a short period prior to this, approximately 100 Stanaback Specials were produced with the same blade but finished with handles of micarta, wood or stag. None of these were serial numbered. The sheaths for all of the Stanaback Specials are stamped "SSP" on the back.
A feature the Stanaback shares with the Sasquatch is the fact that it has been offered in two blade lengths. However, the difference is the short blade will be discontinued and the longer blade will take over, whereas the Sasquatch is offered in two blade lengths. Beginning in 1993, the Stanaback Special blade length will be 4 5/8". It will be stainless steel and of the same grind. These knives will not be serial numbered with the possible exception of a special run of 100 to be produced at a latter date and offered to the purchasers of the original 100 serial numbered knives.
One of the most exciting features of the new knife will be the redesigned sheath. This innovative design was provided by Chris Stanaback and submitted to Greg Gutcher of Sullivan's Holster Shop, the sole supplier of all of the leather sheaths for Randall Made Knives. "Master Leather Craftsmen" best describes the work turned out by the Sullivan shop. Greg has one of the most innovative minds when it comes to sewing up leather sheaths. Piggyback, ankle, exotic skins, the sky's the limit if you want a custom sheath for a Randall knife. The sheath for the new Stanaback Special will have a round diamond EZE-LAP sharpening steel instead of the stone we're so familiar with. And the sheaths will be made of oxblood colored leather with black stitching instead of the usual brown leather. With the exception of the first few 4 5/8" models sold in 1993, the sheaths will be marked with the "Capt. Chris Stanaback" logo around the familiar Randall logo stamp.

Stanaback: A Special Special
Stanaback: A Special Special
Greetings fellow Randall knife freaks! Many of you newer members may not know me, (or care to for that matter). Older veterans of the club may remember some of my earlier articles. My name is Capt. Chris Stanaback, and I am the largest authorized Randall knife dealer in the south.
Rhett has asked me to write a few lines about a limited edition Randall that you folks might be interested in. My Randall dealer's special, the "Stanaback Special", has been featured in this newsletter several times before. It has also been featured, as well as pictured in the Blade magazine on at least 2 occasions: (April 1995 & November 1995) issues.
The original version featured a 4" stainless steel blade of 1/4" stock. The later version features a 4 5/8" blade of 1/4" stock. This later version, 4 5/8", is the only one currently available.
Without going into much detail, the "Stanaback Special" has the same shape and general design as a Model #12-6" "Little Bear Bowie", except shorter of course. This design makes for an excellent "all-around" knife. The false edge is sharpened, and many customers have ordered it with a double hilt. This turns the knife into a very handy defense knife.
The sheath is oxblood in color with black stitching and comes equipped with an EZE-LAP sharpening steel in its pouch. I am, of course, prejudice towards this design of sheath and knife, but many others have also called it the best all-around knife!
O.K. enough about that. What about this limited edition! Fair enough: here goes. When Gary Randall and I came up with the new longer blade length, (about 3 1/2 years ago), I offered a limited run of 100 serialized 4" models. These knives had an issue price of $225.00 and were sold out quickly. They are now going for over $300.000 on the collector's market! Not a bad turn-around in 3 years! These first knives had the regular Randall stone pocket Sullivan sheath. They had stainless steel blades, brass single hilt, brass and black spacers, commando shaped leather handle, brass butt cap, serial number 001 through 100. The only other option on this knife was etching being available. A wrist thong could also be added.
The new "Stanaback Special Limited" will feature the same options as the first, but will have the 4 5/8" length blade, as well as the new sheath with the EZE-LAP sharpening steel. Serial numbers will begin with 001 and end with 200. That's right, 200 total, and the original purchasers of the first 100 will have first refusal of the matching number of the new edition.
This still leaves 100 new limited edition knives that you club members can have a "first shot" at. Just for being in the RKS! All you have to do is contact me at the number listed below and we'll arrange for all the particulars!
Issue price for this limited edition is $325.00, which is the exact same price my new special has been for 2 years! Deposits are required in order to reserve a number. Let's hear from ya'll real soon!
Delivery of these knives will be throughout 1996 & 1997. The final knives will probably be delivered around Sept. 1997. Orders will be taken on a first come first served basis. Only one knife per customer, please. You will also receive with each knife a letter of authenticity, stating that it is one of only 200 such special Randalls made.
The other news regarding my "Stanaback Special" is unlimited! For the first time ever, thanks to the craftsman at Randall Knives and of course Gary Randall, I am pleased to announce that "Stanaback's" will be available in O1 carbon steel, as well as stainless steel from now on! This has several advantages for the person who wants a really rugged all-around knife, but wants the easy sharpening ability of a carbon blade! It will also be the only "Stanaback" that can be purchased for under $300.00 ($295.00 issue price). The other advantage is that now you can have a "Stanaback Special" any way you want it.
All hilts and handles are available, as well as all collars and caps. Exotics are available on a very limited basis, plus whatever ya'll can come up with (and God knows that's unlimited)!
Well, that about does it. Now all of you knife freaks can have a new knife "fix" just by giving me a call! Hope to hear from you and to all members of the club: Happy New Year!!! ////// Capt. Chris

Stanaback: Stanaback Special
Stanaback: Stanaback Special
There are several various stories about what "is" and what is "not" available, with regards to my "Stanaback Special" dealers special. Let me try and answer some of these questions and tell you about a particular variance in the process. First: A little history: For those of you who have already heard this, I apologize. In 1983 Jeff McCartney was trying to fix a broken Randall knife. It was a Model #23-4 1/2", "Gamemaster" that had developed a small crack in the top bevel...the area that is sharp on the top of the blade. Jeff is one of the "top dog" craftsman at Randall. Being great at what he does, Jeff whittled away and came up with an interesting design. He wound up with a 4" knife, made from 1/4" stainless steel bar stock, with a "Bowie"-style top bevel! It sort of looked like an "Old Style" Trout & Bird on steroids! (the T&B is 3/16" stock). To put it another way: The knife Jeff had designed, by accident, looked like a 4 inch version of a #12-6", "Little Bear Bowie"!
All of this happened at the exact time I was trying to figure what "way-cool" design I would use for my Randall "Dealer's Special". I took one look at Jeff's creation and..."DONE DEAL"!! This was the basis for the first "Stanaback Special". A 4" bowie design, forged from 1/4" stainless steel stock and available with many many different options!
Later I would try a carbon steel (longer 4 5/8") version, but it did not sell well at all and was attempted for only a brief period of time.
There are about 50 examples of this O1 version out there in the real world. The stainless remains much more popular to this day, and is currently available in both of my blade lengths, i.e. 4" and 4 5/8". The 4 inch version has a black "basket-weaved" sheath, while the 4 5/8" has an oxblood colored sheath with an "EZE-LAP" diamond sharpening steel located on the front panel, in a "tube" pouch. These are the only 2 sheath configurations available on one of my specials and are not interchangeable or swapable (is that word?)
When I was attempting to try the O1 version, I had a batch of 4" stainless steel knives to order up first. I made all of them with a straight leather handle and a serial number from 1 to 100. This was the first run of "Stanaback Specials, Limited" and are the only 4 inch Stanabacks, to this day, with serial number. They had traditional red, white and blue spacers, stainless steel blade, thumb notches, brass hilt (single), leather handle and a duralumin butt cap.
Then: in 1992 (or so) I had an idea to make up another "Limited" special. This would utilize the longer, 4 5/8" blade. The "Stanaback Special, Limited II" was born. These knives were a little more "tricked-out" and 200 were available. They were also 1/4" stainless steel stock, thumb notches, brass single hilt (all just like the first offering), and also had some additional "goodies"! Instead of the red, white and blue spacers, brass and black were added, giving this knife a much more rich appearance. The leather handle was ordered "commando-shaped". The butt cap was ordered in brass to match up the hardware and rounded for comfort in carry and exceptional good looks! These knives were serial numbered 1 through 200.
O.K.: Now for the "rest of the story"! (Sorry, Paul Harvey). I had not thought too much about this special for a few years and, when going through the old yellow legal pad that listed all of the owners and their serial numbers, I noticed a few dozen that "never got ordered"! I have decided to, through Rhett's fine newsletter, let the current members in good standing of the RKS, have a stab (bad pun) at obtaining these knives...if ya'll would like one!
There are no "special" numbers available and the orders will be on a first come / first served basis, but I am sure that most who have not already obtained one of these "Stanaback Specials" will be able to do so. I have included some photos of my personal one. The price for RKS members will be $525.00, plus S.H. and INS. (usually about $15). If interested, please email me at [email protected]. A $25.00 donation will be made to the special fighter's fund for each RKS members order. Any questions? Call me at 1-407-436-1113 or, of course...the "email". Best for now, Capt. Chris Stanaback

Stanaback: Stanaback "Matched Pairs"
Stanaback: Stanaback "Matched Pairs"
In the RKS yearly meeting at the Blade Show, last June, I promised members of the RKS (Randall Knife Society) that they would have first shot at these "matched pairs" (sets, if you will) of my Stanaback Specials. I also promised to save/hold a few "sets" for the good members who, either could not attend the Blade show, or do not participate in the RKS "forums". I make this announcement to fulfill that promise to the RKS members.
Here is your chance to order a set of these "matched pairs" of my Stanaback Specials.
I am approaching (actually it's already here) my 25th anniversary as an "Authorized" Randall Knife Dealer. I am working on a project (to be named later) to commemorate that event. In the meantime, a project I started and never really got going (Ever have one of those?) was the offering of a special series of "matched pairs" (sets, if you will) of my Stanaback Specials. These pairs will consist of 2 Stanaback Specials, one with a 4" and one with a 4 5/8" blade. They will be made identical. When I say identical, I mean every aspect of them, including the sheaths! In the past, a 4" Stanaback Special featured a black "basket-weaved" sheath. The longer special (4 5/8") was supplied with an "oxblood" (fancy name for cordovan or burgundy) sheath of smooth leather with an EZE-Lap sharpening steel attached to the front panel, via a tube pouch.
This matched pair is going to have "both" sheaths made in black basket. I have made a special arrangement with Greg Gutcher to supply the longer sheath, complete with my special stamp and Randall keeper strap snap. Both blades will come "tricked-out" as follows:
A) Special forging (Dealer Special)
B) TB (Top bevel sharpened)
C) BCP (Bowie clip point)
D) Nickel silver single hilt
E) Aluminum & black spacers
F) Randall supplied micarta handles (Your choice: Green canvas / Maroon micarta / Black micarta)
G) Teardrop shaped handles
H) Compass installed
I) Wrist thong
J) Special "black basket" sheaths
K) Certificate of Authenticity
There are 9 of these sets available. A deposit of $200 is required at the time of ordering. They will be sold on a first come / first served basis. Limit is one set per customer. Just get in touch with me and I'll let you know exactly when your particular set will be delivered. "All" sets will be completed within 24 months, beginning with my December order of this year. The delivered price will start at $1350.00 and remain set at that price, plus any additional catalog price increases that would be incurred over the span of the 24 month period.
In addition to this limited edition set, any person who orders these and takes delivery will be allowed to have first refusal on my 25th anniversary Randall knife! That project is still in the planning stages, but I can promise you folks something unique and collectable! My dealer's special has always held an excellent reputation in the collector's field. The reason for this is probably too complex for my mind to get wrapped around, but I think this is part of it. They (my Stanaback specials) have always been scarce on the "open market" due to the fact that I limit the amount that are sold. Only about 8 or 9% of my total Randall orders are made up in Stanaback Specials. (10% on a "big" order)
To put this in perspective: "ALL" Stanaback Specials ever sold have numbered far less than just "one" of the limited (1500 total) editions of the Randall Miniatures!! I think for all of the above reasons you will find this limited offering an excellent collector's value, a unique "set" and a very pleasing "package" that you can be proud to own!!
A certificate of authenticity, in your name will personalize the set for you! /// Capt. Chris Stanaback
